Tips for First-Time Competitors
Thinking about entering your first competition this month? Here's what you need to know:
Before the Event
- Register early. Many events cap their divisions, and popular time slots fill up fast. Don't wait until the last week.
- Know the format. WNL events run Challenge Course, Flow Course, Full Course, and Head-to-Head formats — each one is different. FINA has Speed and Endurance variants. Read the event description so you know what to expect.
- Train the basics. You don't need to be perfect. Focus on completing obstacles cleanly rather than going for speed. A clean run beats a fast fall every time.
On Competition Day
- Arrive early. Give yourself time to check in, warm up, and walk the course if allowed.
- Bring the essentials. Water, snacks, chalk (if the venue allows it), and comfortable athletic clothing. Layers are smart for venues with varying temperatures.
- Watch other competitors. If you're in a later heat, use the time to study how others approach the obstacles. You'll pick up technique tips and strategy just by watching.
- Have fun with it. The ninja community is one of the most supportive in all of sports. People cheer for everyone, especially first-timers. Enjoy the experience — there will always be more competitions.
